Following the successful prototype testing, we incorporated several changes into the production boat. The hull has increased volume in the nose for a dry ride out through the surf and an enhanced tail section to give smooth ride characteristics when climbing over steep waves (and a good pick-up when surfing!) The overall length has been shortened slightly to make off-the-water storage and handling a little easier too. The waterline length however remains, to maintain a nice turn of speed. When held flat the hull tracks in a straight line even when coasting, and has been balanced by a combination of volume distribution and shape to give neutral directional stability in most wind conditions. Even though the ISEL is a smaller boat it retains enough volume and shape in the bow and stern to shed water in the roughest conditions, giving a smooth, dry ride.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hull section changes character, from a Vee at the entry point of the bow, rounded through the front section, soft chined under the cockpit, rounded again under the stern hatch to a defined keel section at the stern. The rounded sections of the hull give a cushioning effect in waves while the chined section aids surfing and maximizes top speed in downwind situations. In testing, we have been pleased with the ease of wave catching and the high top speed when surfing. The square sides above the chined section combined with the width gives high secondary stability when the ISEL is edged or leaned. The chines also assist turning when the boat is placed on edge. Towards the limit of edging the ISEL firms up and remains a stable and predictable platform. The hull volume distribution progressively disengages the stern during edging, making the kayak easily maneuverable as the stern keel raises to the surface, releasing its grip and aiding turning.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDeck:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe lowered deck of the ISEL, combined with the integrated thigh braces of the cockpit rim and the adjustable seat, make for a precise fit that provides accurate feedback and instills confidence. The ISEL is fitted with the Rockpool Kayaks designed adjustable plate footrest. This is angled for a strong natural ankle position which allows the paddler to finely adjust their leg alignment. The hull configuration gives high forward speed due to its long waterline relative to the overall length. The hull shape maintains good directional stability when moving but the flatter centre section and chined hull gives good manoeuvrability in confined spaces and tight turns. The Eto is designed to have neutral directional stability in most wind conditions and requires minimal use of the skeg.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bow has good shape and volume to maintain a dry ride through choppy conditions. The buoyant bow is nicely balanced with the volume in the stern to give a gentle ride over large, steep waves. The volume in the stern also allows the Eto to accelerate nicely when catching a wave without the nose tending to bury. It surfs well, catching waves easily and then responsive but forgiving when riding the wave.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fullness of the centre section gives confident and predictable edging with high levels of stability even when under an extensive lean. As the boat is leaned the stern progressively lifts from the water, making the turn progressively easier and quicker. No simple matter! The long waterline combines a large cargo volume with a good cruising speed. In order to counter this length and maintain good manoeuvrability, a flattened hull was placed in the centre section. This results in surprisingly good manoeuvrability for spot turns and when in the surf, it also gives very good levels of stability. The extended keel section to the rear maintains good directional stability when paddling on a heading but lifts free from the water when on a lean to aid turning. The MENAI has been designed to remain directionally neutral in most wind conditions with a slight tendency to turn up-wind as wind strength increases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe wide hull and distinct chines give a very stable boat with comfortable and predictable edging characteristics – this is a good boat for taking photographs! The large volume in the bow gives a nice dry ride through chop and gentle handling over larger waves. The fine stern complements the bow, allowing the boat to ride up and over steeper waves. The volume distribution in the centre section allows the stern keel section to lift during edging, shortening the waterline and increasing the manoeuverability.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDeck:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe MENAI deck has obvious differences from other boats in the Rockpool range. First of all is the fitting of an oval front hatch; this allows easy storage of bulky expedition kit in the bow as well as the stern. The front deck also has a small day hatch fitted just ahead of the cockpit. This gives easily accessed storage when afloat for all those useful bits and pieces you need on longer crossings. No need for an ugly deckbag! The front deck also has a moulded compass recess and mouldings for storage of split paddles. The number of deck elastics has been increased to provide greater storage for items too bulky to fit in the forward day hatch. All deckline fittings are recessed for a neater, smoother look and to make life a little easier during rescue drills.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rear deck too has a large oval hatch, along with a conventional day hatch.
